Triggers and actions

What you can automate with Mailchimp

Every step Mailchimp adds to FlowWP, named and described as it appears in the editor, with the plan that includes it.

Triggers 3

Events in Mailchimp that can start a workflow.

  • Someone subscribes to a Mailchimp audience

Runs when an address joins the audience — from your signup form, from an import, or from a workflow. Mailchimp only reports a Pending address once they confirm.

  • Someone unsubscribes from a Mailchimp audience

Runs when an address leaves the audience. Somebody reporting a campaign as spam arrives here too, and the reason tells them apart.

  • A Mailchimp subscriber changes their email address

Runs when somebody updates their address. Both addresses are on the trigger, so a step after it can find the matching record on this site and move it too.

Actions 7

What a workflow can do in Mailchimp.

  • Add or update a Mailchimp subscriber

Matched by email address. Pending sends Mailchimp’s confirmation email; Subscribed adds them outright, which needs consent you already hold.

  • Tag a Mailchimp subscriber

Adds tags to somebody already on the audience. A tag the audience does not have yet is created.

  • Remove tags from a Mailchimp subscriber

They stay on the audience; they simply lose those tags. A tag they never had is not an error.

  • Unsubscribe from a Mailchimp audience

Marks them unsubscribed. They stay on the audience as a record, which is what lets Mailchimp keep them off every later campaign.

  • Create and send a Mailchimp campaign

Builds a regular campaign for an audience and, if you tell it to, sends it. Sending cannot be undone, so it saves a draft unless you choose otherwise.

Set it up

  1. 1In FlowWP Pro, open Connections and add a Mailchimp connection.
  2. 2Choose that connection in any Mailchimp step.
  3. 3Test the workflow once, then activate it. Nothing runs before that.

What FlowWP sends

In FlowWP Pro, when you add a Mailchimp connection or run a Mailchimp step, FlowWP sends your API key and the subscriber details to Mailchimp's Marketing API. Activating a Mailchimp trigger also registers your site's callback address with Mailchimp.

Nothing runs until you activate a workflow, and every run is recorded step by step.

Put paying customers on your Mailchimp audience

A paid order adds the customer to an audience as Pending, so Mailchimp emails them to confirm before it counts them — the compliant way round. If your checkout already asks for consent, change the step to Subscribed.

Put new WordPress users on your Mailchimp audience

Anyone who creates an account joins the audience as Pending and is tagged Member, so your list follows your membership without anybody exporting a CSV.

Keep a note when a subscriber changes their email

Mailchimp keeps the new address and forgets the old one. This writes the old one onto their profile as a note, so the next person to open it can still match them to an order, an account or a conversation.

Hear about it when someone reports your email as spam

Somebody pressing unsubscribe is ordinary. Somebody marking your campaign as spam is not — enough of them and your sending reputation goes, and Mailchimp will not tell you unprompted. This watches only for those and emails you each one.
